2022 was a positive year of progression and change for BECK.  We welcomed new members to the BECK team and the board, completed complex and high-profile projects and celebrated winning the contracts for several prestigious new schemes.  Once again, the BECK team raised a significant amount of money for a multitude of worthy causes and vital charities.  Finally, our keen focus on improved sustainability saw great gains made throughout the year.

March saw the long-awaited opening of The Burrell Collection in Glasgow.  The museum team were proud to be part of the refurbishment of 36 galleries and our works increased the size of the museum by 35%.  An innovative, modular system of setworks, designed in-house at BECK, futureproofed the collection by allowing it to be reorganised limitless times.

Also in March we celebrated International Women’s Day by highlighting and celebrating women right across our business, in a wide variety of roles.

The beginning of Quarter 2 saw the museum team awarded the fit-out works for Showtown, Blackpool’s brand-new museum of fun and entertainment.

April is stress awareness month and the BECK staff at head office began enjoying the benefit of fitness sessions for the first time.  Research from the mental health foundation last year, found 74% of UK adults felt so stressed they were overwhelmed or unable to cope.  Exercise has long been acknowledged as one of the best strategies for combating stress.

At the end of April, we were delighted to attend the International Hospitality Investment Forum for the first time since 2019.  We hosted our annual evening drinks on the final night of the conference, where we welcomed over 100 clients and valued contacts.

We bid a fond farewell to retiring Group Finance Director Jonathan Dart and welcomed Lynn Sheach who joined the company in his place.

In May, we sponsored and attended the Museums + Heritage Awards.  The team was thrilled when our project, the Holocaust Galleries at the Imperial War Museum in London, won ‘Permanent Exhibition of the Year’.  In June the galleries went on to win the ‘Exhibition Design Award’ at the Design Week Magazine Awards.

July saw several of the BECK team take part in the JLL Property Triathlon for the sixth time.  The event has raised an incredible £2 million over 15 years.  Twelve of the team then took part in the Paragon Mudathon, the commercial property industry’s extreme 5K mud challenge.  All proceeds raised from the event went to Small Steps, The Brain Tumour Charity and LandAid.

On National Fitness Day we launched our own BECK Charity Challenge with the aim of the team collectively covering 12,312km.  The distance from head office to all our sites and back again. Thanks to the incredible efforts of the staff, we achieved a combined total distance of 14,477km and raised £8,844 for Cancer Research UK and The Grace Dear Trust.

The museum team were thrilled to achieve the dust free milestone at the Hunterian Museum in the Royal College of Surgeons.  They celebrated by presenting the client team with bespoke, engraved drinks coasters, made from original marble from the historic site which was unable to be reused.

Our interiors team began works onsite at the UK’s first Six Senses hotel at The Whiteley in Bayswater.  The prestigious project will create a luxurious 111 key hotel, close to Hyde Park and Kensington Palace.

In August we were honoured to be awarded a Distinction by the British Safety Council at the International Safety Awards, placing us in the Top 10 of national contractors.  The awards are internationally recognised and from 647 applications received, just 135 organisations were awarded a Distinction.

In the final quarter of the year, we made great strides to improve our mental health provision by enrolling more of our colleagues on mental health first aid courses.

Our teams completed works at two important projects.  The Lift 109 experience at Battersea Power Station and the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons.  Meanwhile BECK Scotland announced they had been appointed to deliver the fit-out, refurbishment and rebranding of the historic Grosvenor Hotel in Edinburgh.

November saw more nominations and awards for our key projects.  We attended the AHEAD awards where, last year, NoMad London won a raft of awards.  This year we were delighted to have The Carlton Tower Jumeirah shortlisted in the ‘Spa & Wellness’ category.  At the Muse Design Awards, The Holocaust Galleries achieved a Gold Award in the Exhibits, Pavilions & Exhibitions category.

We were thrilled when the beautiful hardback book, ‘Made In London, From Workshops to Factories’, launched.  The BECK workshop was chosen as one of only 50 London manufacturing business to be featured.  Our workshop produces intricate, bespoke & hand-crafted joinery for all our projects including luxury hotels, high-end residential projects, museums & visitor experiences. It’s a part of the business we are incredibly proud of.

We finished the year with a fantastic day in the Surrey countryside.  Sixteen of the team spent the day West Horsley Place to plant over 300 trees, one for every member of staff.  Along with the other sustainable measures taken around the business, this venture further offset our timber usage and pushed forward the company’s Sustainability agenda.
