In our communication-obsessed world, one of the landmark pieces of information sent in 2014 was this: “It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R.” It was Her Majesty the Queen’s first ever tweet!
It was also with great pleasure that BECK undertook their role as principal contractor, managing the implementation of the entire gallery site. At 2,500 sqm, the gallery is the museum’s largest and most ambitious project to date and its opening has been eagerly awaited since plans were announced by the museum in 2012. The gallery celebrates more than 200 years of innovation in information technologies and communication – from the telegraph in the 19th century to the modern social network – all interwoven with personal stories about how our lives have been transformed as a result.
“It was a great honour for BECK to be part of the team delivering the project and continue to work in our iconic National Museums,” said Graham Wakeford, BECK Managing Director. “BECK have always maintained their passion for the “Best of British” projects; the Information Age gallery is testament to this and one of a several major UK projects to be completed by BECK this year.”
BECK manufactured exhibits in house, as well as working with specialist suppliers and contractors and managing client-appointed sub-contractors. The works included a fantastic range of materials, state-of-the-art interactives and specialist mounting of over 800 unique objects, many of which have never been seen before.
